The top means a variety of sleeveless and non-collar upper body suits used under blouses or shirts. Sleeveless tops/shirts are especially used in sports and exercise. The most common women’s top models are the spaghetti tops and halterneck tops that are tied behind the neck. There are also one-sided and full-strapless tube tops.
Style of unisex fabric shirt named after the T shape of its body and sleeves.
Traditionally it has short sleeves and a round neckline, made of cotton or blend. T-shirts are used in many ways, as a blouse in warm weather or under sweaters, jackets etc. In sport, it is advisable to use technical material to prevent the fabric from absorbing water. Those are generally made of polyester or polyamide (better quality for sweaty sports)
Long-sleeve style of unisex fabric shirt named after the T shape of its body and sleeves. Traditionally made of cotton or blend, these days also of merinowool and blends. Long sleeve t-shirts are used in many ways, as a blouse (with a bit cooler weather than with short sleeved) or under sweaters, jackets etc. In sport, it is advisable to use technical material to prevent the fabric from absorbing water. Those are generally made of polyester or polyamide (better quality for sweaty sports)
Garment for the body, usually simple in style, reaching from the shoulders to a length somewhere between the hips and knees. Sleeves are usually 3/ 4 in length. Anything can work as a material: the lighter the material, the cooler it feels. Natural fibers breathe better than artificial fibers, but natural fibers absorb moisture while exercising.
The sweater is a pullover made of thick material (sweatshirt knit) and often has a hood. Sweaters with a hood also have versions with zippers, so they work like a hooded jacket. Sweater warmer than ordinary long sleeve t-shirt, but not as warm as a woolen sweater/pullover.
is a garment that protects the upper body and is worn over a blouse or a t-shirt. It is usually woven and holds the wind better than a knit wear. The jacket can be fastened, for example, with buttons, a zipper, a velcro fastening, a hook or a belt, or a combination of these. The jacket belt can also be an ornament. Light jackets are usually used only during summer time in Finland.
(A.K.A. bomber, blazer, denim jacket, wind breaker..)
Wool knitted pullover or jacket which works well in outdoor activities. It keeps you warm in cold because wool isolates heat and keeps moisture away. It also breathes well in warmer weather.
Merino and alpaca are popular and so soft quality wool that can also be used in underwear.
is a traditional garment with a hem that covers both the upper and lower body. The dress may consist of interconnected dressing (i.e., blouse) and skirting (i.e. skirt) or full-length garments. The dress can be called a long dress or a casual dress. Light dresses work well in the summer, but dresses can also be used in other seasons, when used with warm layers such as tights and wool cardigan.
a garment used by both men and women to cover the hip area and the upper part of the thighs. Generally the length of the shorts is above the knees and the material can be almost any: from the cotton and linen to man-made fibers. In Finland, shorts are usually only used during at the summer time with the warmest weather of them all.
is a short skirt model. The length of its hem is usually above the knees. The mini skirt can be used in the same way as the shorts and its heat value is almost the same. The lighter the material, the cooler the effect on the body.
Leggings are a long or midi underpants, which can also be used as outerwear, for example as running trousers. Leggings mostly resemble tights. They are mostly used with short dresses, skirts and nowadays with shorts, tops and hoodies. Leggings as underpants are usually made of cotton, running pants made of polyester or polyamide (better quality for sweaty sports) blended to elastane. Tights could be either made of polyamide like nylon or thicker ones cotton or (merino) wool.

are the garment protecting lower body and has medium thickness. It has better heat value than leggings or culottes but doesn’t repel water and wind like shell pants. Perhaps the best-known fabric trousers are jeans, made of denim fabric, mostly blue.
These fabric pants are loose from top to bottom and work like a skirt. For example, trendy culottes are pants that stretch slightly over the knee, but not up to the ankles. They feel like a light skirt and drape beautifully.
is a garment that is uniform and wrapped around the hips. Its purpose is to cover and protect the lower body and legs. Anything can work as a material: the lighter material, the cooler it feels on the body. Natural fibers breathe better than artificial fibers. Airy fabric works like air conditioning and does not pass all the sunlight on the skin.
repels water and wind, but it does not always have a warming lining, or the lining is removable. The idea is to wear layers under the shell pants. The waterproofness of the shell is based on a membrane attached to the fabric. There are numerous types of membrane materials, and the best known membrane is probably Gore-Tex.

Pillar value indicates how well the pants hold water. 6000- 9000 mm repels the drizzle when the rain force is weak, 10 000- 15 000 mm repels the torrential rain but not long term, over 16 000 mm proof the water well even long period of time. Check the water resistance rating before purchase!

is a garment to be worn on the other garment, including the light jacket and blazer. The fabric material and lining vary depending on the intended use and types. For example, the cover may be wool, blended fabric or leather, lining viscose or synthetic fiber.
Perfect as a jacket with cool and dry weather or as a warm additional layer underneath shells in cold weather. The jacket is packed easily when not in use, making it easy to carry with you. This has thin outer fabric and usually no rain or wind resistantance. In Finland its suitable in any season of year.
padded jacket with a good resistance of cold and moisture for winter use. Down and feathers isolate cold best, but artificial fillings are also available on the market. The fur of the hood brim keeps the cold wind away from your face when the hood is used. The longer hem the better it protects from the cold. Make sure there is no air gap in the wrists, neck and waist!

The waterproofness of the shell is based on a membrane attached to the fabric. There are numerous types of membrane materials, and the best known membrane material is probably Gore-Tex. This category could also include a softshell jacket, although its pillar value is low and waterproofness is not as good as a standard shell jacket

Raincoat is a jacket that is used for waterproofing. A raincoat can have a hood that protects the head from the rain. When using the hood, there is no need for a separate umbrella in rainy conditions. The longer the raincoat, the better protecting the trousers from getting wet. Pillar value indicates how well the jacket holds water, the raincoat must be at least 15000 mm

Disposable Raincoat is made of light plastic and is cheap. Usually it can only be used once, as it breaks easily when taken off.
A sandal is an open footwear with just the bottom and straps over the foot. Sandals leave most of the leg exposed (especially toes) and are the most airy footwear. Sandals are used mainly during the summer, when the weather is warm. There are many different types of sandals, and their bottom can be made of, for example, cork, wood, rubber or leather.
The sneaker is a functional shoe, usually made of canvas. They are used in summer with dry weather or in spring and autumn when it is not too cold. There are many kinds of sneakers, both for leisure and for different sports. They are light and breathable compared to boots.
are suitable for autumn and spring time but also for summer. They can be long-legged or short-legged, low-heeled or high-heeled, with or without laces. Boots are usually made of leather, suede or patent leather. The heat value of boots is better than sneakers but weaker than winter boots.

(A.K.A. combat boots, ankle boots...)
Rubber boots are waterproof footwear, most commonly made of rubber compound. Generally they are used in wet, rainy or dirty conditions to protect the user. They vary in length, but half-legged or near-knee height are the most common models. Rubber boots don’t isolate heat well, so you need to use wool socks as insulation during autumn and spring time. They are not suitable in winter time.
Winter boots are warm and usually fur-lined shoes for cold weather. The top material should be waterproof and dirt-repellent. The bottom rubber must not harden in the cold and must retain its holding properties in the cold and icy surfaces.
are decorative garment that covers the toes and foot. Its purpose is to relieve abrasions between the foot and the shoe, keep the toes warm and absorb the sweat from the foot. Ankle socks are used only with warm weather so the material could be cotton, viscose or even thin nylon.
The sock are a bag-like garment that cover the foot and ankle. The length of the socks may vary just above the ankle to the top of the thigh. Its purpose is to relieve abrasions between the foot and the shoe, keep the foot and ankle warm, absorb the sweat from the foot and it can also be used as a decoration. They are usually made of cotton, viscose or blend.
The wool sock is a woolen sock. Wool socks are very good at insulating heat, and therefore they are an excellent insulator for winter frost. Air inside the wool is a good heat insulation. The wool itself also absorbs moisture very well, and the wool socks do not feel wet. The length of the socks may vary from just above the ankle to the top of the thigh.
The beanie is a headgear that is often used in cold weather to keep the head and ears warm. In Finland, a light beanie may be needed also in the summer time, but certainly in early autumn and late spring.
In wintertime you need a beanie with good thermal insulation and windstopper material. It keeps your head and ears warm but especially protects your brain from heat loss. Even though your head might feel warm in subzero conditions, your body maintains the blood circulation in the head to ensure it stays warm, which is the reason why not covering your head causes heat loss.
(A.K.A. wool beanie, furry cap, bobble hat...)
A scarf is a fabric piece used as a garment, typically around the neck or head. Scarves can be used either to warm and protect from the elements, as well as a decorative outfit or as a hallmark of religion. In Finland a light scarf is used in spring and autumn times, sometimes also in summer depending on the weather conditions.
made of thick wool yarn with a good thermal insulation. Heat can easily drift through the openings of the garments, so the scarf is an important accessory to protect the neck and keep the entire body warm. Many times in winter time you also need to protect your face from the wind by covering it with a scarf and placing the scarf higher than just around the neck. Especially the cheeks area is vulnerable to frost bites in harsh and cold wind conditions in winter time.
are designed for protecting hands from the cold. Usually, a glove means that each finger has its own compartment in fingertips. These are for cool air but not suitable for cold frost. In Finland gloves are used in spring and autumn, sometimes also in summer depending on the material they are made of.
are gloves made of wool yarn and are worn on the palm and fingers area. The spatula has its own space for the thumb, but the other fingers are in a uniform state. That way the cooling surface is smaller, so the mittens are warmer than the gloves where each finger is separated. In winter time you should use woolen mittens with cotton gloves inside, or just leather mittens with fur lining.
means a reflective sheet or other structure, and in particular, a high-reflective pendant plate, label or equivalent designed to protect the road users in the dark. The reflector should be used in Finland when the evenings are getting dark during autumn and winter. It improves the safety of pedestrians and other light traffic in the dark.

Sunglasses with shaded lenses are used to prevent sun glare. Because of the darkening, the sunglasses reduce the amount of light coming into the eye, which makes the pupils expand. Expanded pupils are exposed to dangerous ultraviolet radiation more than usual. Therefore, only sunglasses with a UV protective layer should be used. You need sun glasses in Finland especially in spring and summer time due to the massive amount and duration of sunlight.
